Monthly Reflection – March 2013

Dear all,

I hope this month’s reflection finds you all well.

1 Corinthians 12:4-11

New International Version (NIV).

4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. 5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.

7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. 8 To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues,[a] and to still another the interpretation of tongues.[b] 11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.

So March is upon us already; this year is moving by really quickly and spring is in the air! The good thing about that from my point of view is that my birthday is at the end of March and that means- presents! And with that in mind I am glad to say I am being asked-

‘What would you like for your Birthday?’

I have had a careful think about it and so far my list is as follows- ‘A Two week Holiday in Jamaica, A new Motorbike, A new Car, A new MP3 player, a new Laptop computer and Skyfall on DVD’. As you can probably imagine I am not overly hopeful of receiving all of the things on that list but never the less the question was asked so I answered it truthfully (And it is nice to dream!)

I was however delighted to hear that Small Evs- (my five year old daughter Abigail) had asked Mummy if she could pick something for my birthday whilst walking around the supermarket- After Mummy had said yes Abigail proceeded to pick the following- ‘A roll of Cling film, a set of Scart leads, a bag of frozen mixed vegetables and a Scooby Doo DVD’– I was tempted by the Cling film I have to admit……..!

This year my birthday falls as on Easter Sunday which means that as well as joining my church family in celebrating Easter I will also have the pleasure of having Happy Birthday sung to me in church (Always a little embarrassing I find!) and the joy of my Easter Egg!

It does however focus my mind on the question of gifts/presents and not what I would like for my Birthday but more what I actually need. We see above in the passage from Corinthians that there are many types of spiritual gift that are given to believers. Each of us is given the gift and the talents that God needs us to use in the furtherance of his Kingdom- these are the gifts we should all seek and desire.

The problem is that in the world people desire the kind of things on my list above before they desire the gifts that God has for all of us in Matthew 6 it says-

‘But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.’

It is very easy for us to get caught up in trappings of modern life- and seek the things of this earth that will eventually and ultimately fade away- Including everything on my Birthday wish list above and the cling film! Instead we should be focusing on God’s will for us, what his provision is for us and what he wants us to do for him. When we plant our dreams and desires in God’s word so that they are nourished by His love and blessings, they can thrive. God nourishes our lives with His love and care so that we are protected from harm and able to flourish in this world despite the problems surrounding us.

Remember today that God wants the very best for us and will provide it to anyone who lives according to His word and nourishes his soul with God’s promises.

We remember at this time of year the ultimate gift and the ultimate price that has been paid for each of us by the Death of our Lord Jesus Christ on the Cross- and the gift of Grace that allows us to be forgiven for our sin. We should never forget that this gift is better and more valuable than all the Christmas and Birthday presents we can ever receive.

As for me and my 39th Birthday- I will be content with whatever my loved ones buy me or not this year- even if it is a Scooby Doo DVD!

But on my Birthday this year and Easter day I will marvel in the knowledge that the ultimate gift of forgiveness through grace has been given to me- not because of what I have done but because of the Death of my Lord on the Cross at the very first Easter.

So from the Family Evans and your Branch Leadership I wish you all a wonderful Easter and pray

‘That the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with us all, now and evermore.

God Bless
